The Saving Patty Trailers

The person who did this film violated the privacy of the daughter of Patty and put information about this person without her permission.  In no way shape or form did she ever give permission to publicly humiliate, or use photos on the internet of her, or tell her story.  She considers this film distastful.  It does not lighten our burden when we recklessly make the crosses of others heavier. 

This film potrays the daughter of Patty as a hopeless victem of circumstance who is angry.  The daughter of Patty is a well rounded individual with many talents and is reseliant.  She is happily engaged to someone special, not Joey.  She also has a promising education, and carreer.  She is happy, she writes her own music on the piano, she is a promising writer of poetry, and she enjoys traveling, and her family and future inlaws.  She will be married in May, 2008.

Her adoptive family supported the daughter of Patty throuhout the filming and the passing of Patty. This film was an exploitation of the past, and although it was painful for the daughter of Patty to experience reading of this website, it did not destroy her.  Her family and fiance’ and friends agree with her that life is great, there are many blessings, and The Creator always provides, and the daughter of Patty is proud that this film was rejected at the Sundance Film Festival.

Note from the filmmaker about the above post: Patty’s daughter signed a standard industry release form that grants us the rights to use “any released version of the footage on any electronic media and in any venue of exhibition.” The Internet is one of those electronic media, so the stills of Patty’s daughter derived from the video footage and posted elsewhere on this Web site are covered by the release form. We had her permission and cooperation on both shoots, although during the second shoot, her ambivalence became evident when emotions ran high between her and the other subjects. Apparently, she believes that we will only use negative footage of her, which isn’t the case.

I have taken down one photo in the entry “Looper Family Pictures” at the daughter’s request, since it was given to me by a member of the Looper family and may not have been taken with the daughter’s permission.

The trailers on this page were made before any filmed interviews with the daughter, so I can only assume that her objection to using information “without her permission” refers to several other posts on this Web site where her name is mentioned as a subject of the documentary and her picture appears as a still from the film. These posts are my journal of the filmmaking process, and I believe they don’t require subjects’ additional permission. They’re wholly my own experiences and opinions.

The filmmakers spent many months talking to the subject and preparing her for the filming, which she knew might be difficult. Of course, we wouldn’t attempt to “publicly humiliate” any documentary subject, and the final cut (which was not ready in time to be shown to the Sundance festival screeners) will attempt a fair depiction of all subjects, as stated in the release form. I regret that she feels it’s been a negative experience for her, but it is indeed a record of the past and is not meant to portray the daughter’s current life circumstances.
